Connecting to Tesla via VNC

  1.  At a CEAT Labs Windows 7 computer, log into tesla01 ( using your Okey username and password via the SSH (Secure Shell or putty) client from the desktop you are using.
  2. At the login prompt on the tesla server, start a VNC server by typing:

    Vncserver  -depth  24  -geometry  1024x768

  3. The system should respond with something similar to:

    New 'X' desktop is
    Creating default startup script  /home/OSU/[username]/.vnc/xstartup
    Starting applications specified in  /home/OSU/[username]/.vnc/xstartup
    Log file is  /home/OSU/[username/.vnc/

  4. The first time you start vncserver,  you will be prompted  for a password. This password is for the vncserver and can be the same as your tesla password.
  5. From the Windows Start Menu  on your desktop, start VNC Viewer (VNC Viewer you installed on your PC).   You will be prompted to give the server name.

    For the  “Server: “,   type:  (where xx is the number 31 from step 3 above).

  6. Log in using the password you created when you started vncserver in Step 4.
  7. When your session is over,  remove the vncserver instance by typing the following at the login  prompt:

    vncserver -kill  :xx (where xx is the number 31 from step 3 above).
